The eccentric home of the world’s most
innovative gin distillery
When owners William & Lucy of the award winning Cambridge Distillery approached Afroditi, it was with a unique and clear brief: to create an interactive retail space, gin tailoring laboratory and experiential bar in the centre of Cambridge, dedicated completely to the appreciation of Gin. Voted not once but three consecutive times as the most innovative distillery in the world, it was imperative that this new concept encompassed an equal balance of the pioneering new laboratory space with the heritage led cues of the already established distillery.

With this in mind, Afroditi applied a differing aesthetic to the various winding levels of the grade II listed building. Positioning the ground floor as the master distiller’s lab and the floors above as his home, a clear direction was determined from the beginning. Set against an existing oak panelled shell, the ground floor laboratory takes its materiality from the distillery’s unique process with sleek stainless steel counter tops, knurled metal hardware and scientific glassware. Up to the first floor and through the velvet curtain, you enter the distiller’s study, an inviting space filled with homely nuances and botanical cues.
